The problem

The Irish Independent had a large digital readership and a clear ambition: build a mobile news app that could deepen engagement and drive paid subscriptions.

The challenge was twofold. The app needed to be fully optimised for how people consume news on mobile - fast, personalised, easy to read and built around repeat engagement. But it also needed to support a frictionless route to paid access, allowing readers to subscribe and unlock premium content directly inside the app.

The opportunity wasn’t just to launch another news app. It was to create a mobile product that could turn engaged readers into paying subscribers.

What we built

We designed and engineered a mobile app built from the ground up around mobile reading behaviour.

The reading experience is designed to drive repeat engagement. Breaking news alerts and push notifications bring readers in. Personalised content, bookmarking and related articles keep them there. Every feature was built around one goal: making the app the default way Irish Independent readers consume news.

At the core of the product is a frictionless in-app subscription journey, allowing users to sign up, purchase and unlock premium content without leaving the app or encountering unnecessary barriers. Existing subscribers can log in seamlessly, ensuring a consistent experience across platforms.

The result was a single product that served two commercial goals: deepening engagement and driving subscription revenue, without compromising either.

Why it worked

The impact came from treating subscription conversion as a product design problem, not a marketing one.

Most news apps are built to deliver content. This one was built to change behaviour - how often readers come back, how much they read and whether they pay. Every product decision connected to that goal.

The personalisation and notification features drove return visits. The reading experience drove deeper engagement per visit. And the in-app purchase flow converted that engagement into revenue at the moment readers were most likely to act - inside the app, without friction, without being redirected elsewhere.

The result was a step-change in digital performance. The app became the highest performing platform for Independent.ie - driving 42% of all online subscription purchases, with users visiting five times more frequently and reading 50% more articles per visit than on web.
